The XIV International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum” was held in Kazan (Russian Federation). On the eve, Rospatent, together with the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), held a session devoted to the development prospects of relations between Russia and OIC countries in the field of science, technology, and intellectual property.

The session participants discussed the digitalization of the intellectual property field, the prospects of the regional brand institute development, the needs of the OIC countries in the intellectual property field, and the possibilities of deepening cooperation between the patent offices of the Organization member states in bilateral and multilateral aspects. They also raised the issue of education and competence. Oleg Neretin, Director of the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS), spoke as moderator.

One of the issues discussed at the session was the regional Eurasian patent system, which comprises the five OIC member states as well as the observer state, the Russian Federation. Muin Yusupov, Deputy Head of the Division of Mechanics, Physics, and Electrical Engineering of the EAPO Examination Department, presented the advantages of the Eurasian system and the prospects of its development.

He also stated that the EAPO is ready to cooperate both with the patent offices of the OIC member states and with the organization itself. He also highlighted the open nature of the Eurasian Patent Convention, which allows new states to accede to it. It gives national inventors and entrepreneurs broader opportunities to promote their products using intellectual property in new markets.

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the OIC Ramazan Abdulatipov, Deputy Head of Rospatent Andrey Solonovich, Deputy Director of FIPS Roman Zakharov, and Deputy Director of the Russian Research Institute of Economics, Politics and Law in Science and Technology (RIEPL) Inna Bitkina took part in the session.
