From July 14 to 22, the sixty-third series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will be held at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
WIPO Director General Daren Tang opened the meetings, which this year are taking place in a hybrid format in connection with the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. In his greeting to the delegates, Tang stressed the importance of each country's contribution to the development of intellectual property and called IP "the driving force of the world economy", and also called the spirit of multilateral cooperation the main priority of the organization's development.
The honorary first speech was given to the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Jose Ulises Corea e Silva. He noted the importance of the country's involvement in the international processes of formation and development of the IP sphere and thanked for the support from WIPO.
The participants of the opening ceremony of the Assemblies emphasized the impact of the pandemic as the main challenge for innovation in healthcare. Due to the current circumstances, the sustainable development agenda, clean energy and green economy were declared priorities. The delegation of the Eurasian Patent Office will take part in the work of the Assemblies. EAPO President Grigory Ivliev will make a general statement, as well as hold a number of bilateral meetings with the heads of intellectual property departments. Meetings with Deputy Director General of WIPO Lisa Jorgenson and Assistant Director General of WIPO Marco Aleman will take place on the sidelines of the Assembly meetings.
At the bilateral meetings, the parties will discuss prospects for the implementation of joint educational projects, issues of improving regional dispute resolution mechanisms in the field of intellectual property and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the interests of users of the Eurasian patent system.
