The number of Eurasian patent applications from Eurasian countries increased by 18% in 2024
The Eurasian Patent Office has summarized the results of 2024.
In total, the EAPO granted 2,908 patents for inventions and industrial designs originating from around the world in 2024. The EAPO received 3,252 applications for Eurasian patents for inventions. The most popular fields are pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, fine organic chemistry and medical engineering.
A total of 75,046 Eurasian patent applications were filed with the EAPO from 1996 to 2024.
The number of applications filed directly with the EAPO (22% of total filings in 2024) and applications filed through national patent offices of EAPO member states (17% of total filings in 2024) has increased.
As in previous years, the USA is the most active applicant. American applicants filed 29.4% of all patent applications. At the same time, China became more interested in the Eurasian patent. The number of Eurasian applications for inventions from applicants from the People’s Republic of China increased by 9.7% in 2024, and the number of Eurasian design applications increased more than twice. As a result, China ranked as one of three leaders along with the United States and Russia.
“I am convinced that the importance of patenting in Eurasia will increase for Chinese companies. This is primarily due to the rapid growth of mutual economic exchanges between the EAPO Member States and China. Enhancing exports to our countries is a good opportunity for China to develop its economy. Our region is a promising market for high-tech products,” Grigory Ivliev said.
The number of Eurasian applications for invention from applicants from EAPC Contracting states increased by 18% compared to 2023. Most applicants are from Russia. Kazakhstan ranks the second, Belarus ranks third.
The EAPO has proved the global quality level at all stages of the Eurasian applications examination, from application filing to patent granting. The EAPO quality control system has been certified as compliant with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 international standard.
The Eurasian Patent Prosecution Highway Program (EA-PPH Program) has been created. As of 1 January 2025, the national patent offices of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia and Tajikistan participate in the program along with the EAPO. The program aims to reduce duplication of work in patent search and examination and to reduce costs for offices and applicants.
The number of examination work products prepared by the EAPO as an International Searching Authority and Preliminary Examining Authority under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) increased 1.5 times over the previous year.
A pilot project was launched to ensure electronic filing of Eurasian applications through the national patent offices of the EAPO member states. The share of correspondence received by applicants during the patent procedure in electronic form exceeded 93%.
The EAPO engaged in 19 legal proceedings on Eurasian patents. The Eurasian patents for inventions have been upheld in 7 disputes out of 9 cases.
“I express my gratitude to the EAPO member states for their support and consolidation of efforts. This allows for the solving of common issues of IP systems development in the Eurasian space. The EAPO will continue to expand the range of objects protected under the Eurasian patent system. The introduction of the Eurasian utility model is an important step towards unification and simplification of patenting processes for entrepreneurs and researchers. And the registration of the Eurasian trademark will provide new opportunities for companies seeking to strengthen their position in the international arena,” Grigory Ivliev said.
