Today, the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) began its session at WIPO headquarters. It is one of the most important international events in the field of intellectual property.
Representatives of national patent offices, international organizations, and the professional community are discussing the results of the past year’s work and a wide range of issues related to the development of the global IP system, international cooperation, digital transformation, the improvement of WIPO services, and support for innovation.
Delegations from the Eurasian Patent Office and member states of the Eurasian Patent Organization are taking part in the Assemblies.
During the plenary session, WIPO Director General Daren Tang noted that the IP system is undergoing a profound transformation driven by fundamental changes in the global economy and technological development.
IP is coming to the forefront of the global economy and becoming one of the key drivers of innovation: last year, investment in intangible assets grew nearly three times faster than investment in tangible assets, exceeding 10 trillion U.S. dollars.
Speaking about the future, Daren Tang emphasized that WIPO’s mission is not only to respond to ongoing changes but also to shape the future of the IP system. He outlined four program priorities for the next six-year term:
- to make IP a popular, sought-after, and understandable tool for entrepreneurs and creators by developing WIPO services, expanding support at all stages of the IP lifecycle, deepening partnerships, and implementing joint programs;
- to ensure equal access for all countries to the opportunities offered by the global IP system, so that entrepreneurs, inventors, and creators from both developed and developing countries can benefit from it;
- prepare the IP system for future challenges: continue to modernize the international IP infrastructure (including the treaty framework, digital services, data platforms, and AI tools) and ensure that their development keeps pace with the speed of technological change;
- continue to develop WIPO as a modern, effective, and trustworthy international organization capable of maintaining a high level of reliability, digitalization, and financial sustainability in the interests of its member states.
