Patent of the Month: Neurology Enters the High-Tech Era

Eurasian Patent EA 052573, granted to Brainphone LLC (Russia), covers an innovative method for diagnosing Parkinson’s disease and other diseases with parkinsonism syndrome based on voice analysis using artificial intelligence.

Parkinson’s disease is difficult to detect in its early stages, which is when treatment is most effective. The proposed method allows us to peer into the body through our voice – a “window” that is always with us.

For the patient, the process is as simple as possible: they just need to say a few phrases into an app on their smartphone. The audio is sent to a server, where a neural network converts it into a Mel-spectrogram and analyzes microscopic changes that the human ear cannot detect. The AI looks for biomarkers of hypokinetic dysarthria: monotony and impaired articulation, which are characteristic of parkinsonism.

Trained on data from over 1,000 patients, the neural network independently extracts hidden features from the voice, enabling it to detect not only classic Parkinson’s disease but also rarer forms.

Advantages of the technology:

• Accessibility – initial diagnosis can be made without a visit to a clinic

• Objectivity – there is no human element; the result is presented as a numerical probability

• Monitoring – the ability to track the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment

The solution can be integrated into mobile apps, websites, and medical information systems.

The Eurasian Patent System enables legal protection for such solutions in multiple countries at once, thereby facilitating their wider use.
