The Sixty-Sixth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of WIPO Member States started today in Geneva. The meetings are attended bymore than 1,600 delegates, 100 heads of IP offices, including EAPO President Grigory Ivliev.
WIPO Director General Daren Tang noted that the definingmission of supporting innovators and creators from around the world does not exist in isolation, but within a global context.
Daren Tang highlighted main trends that are shapingthe global innovation ecosystem of today:
– despitechallenges and headwinds, global innovation activity remains resilient;
– asenterprises and countries innovate, create and digitalize, what is valuable is shifting from tangible to intangible assets: WIPO estimates that the globalvalue of intangible assets has reached almost 80 trillion U.S. dollars last year;
– innovation is increasingly digital: one-third of the over 3 million patents filed eachyear now relates to digital technologies like AI, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and others;
– attitudes towards IP in society are changing: innovation, creativity and IP are regarded notas peripheral or technical concerns but as central and core to the development, growth and prosperity.
