On June 1, 2021, the EAPO began accepting applications for industrial designs, opening a new chapter in the development of the Eurasian system for the legal protection of intellectual property.

Over the past five years, the Eurasian system for the protection of industrial designs has become a sought-after tool for protecting design solutions across various sectors through a unified regional system operating across eight states.

The system is actively developing across the Eurasian space: amendments are being made to regulatory legal acts, working practices are being established and refined, and disputes are being resolved — both regarding the protection of infringed rights and the invalidation of patents.

Several key developments over the past five years:

• The number of applications filed annually has grown from 92 applications for 190 industrial designs in 2021 to 566 applications for 1,233 industrial designs in 2025;
• The number of patents granted increased from 7 patents covering 16 industrial designs to 531 patents covering 1,125 industrial designs;
• The user base expanded from 9 countries in the first year of operation to more than 30 countries;
• Industrial designs filed for registration covered all 32 classes of the International Classification of Industrial Designs;
• A Eurasian industrial design patent became the subject of an exclusive right pledge agreement;
• The EAPO received an application covering 100 industrial designs simultaneously;
• Work was carried out to integrate the regional system into the international Hague System for the Registration of Industrial Designs. This year, the EAPO is expected to accede to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement.

To date, the EAPO has received over 2,000 applications for more than 4,800 industrial designs under the regional patent system.

The fifth anniversary of the system is not only an opportunity to reflect on its achievements, but also to recognize the steady development of a system that continues to expand its capabilities and strengthen its position as an effective regional mechanism for the protection of industrial designs.
